Verdict : Epic western movie...Tarantino style
Director : Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill)
Cast : Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds, Carnage). Jamie Foxx (Ray, Collateral), Leonardo Dicaprio (Inception, The Departed), Samuel L Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Snakes on a Plane)
Story : Set in the southern states of America two years before the Civil War this is the story of slave turned bounty hunter who goes on a quest to rescue his wife with the help of German dentist turned bounty hunter partner.
Review : Tarantino has this habit of taking various movie genres and making movies about those genres more rather than the subjects they deal with it. This does not mean the core of the movie is some flimsy story line. It is still a very intense movie with a serious subject matter but dealing with the matter in an irreverent way. The result - a thoroughly entertaining and at some times an uncomfortable viewing experience
The same is with Django. It is a western set in the southern states of America dealing with slavery. So we have a lot of gunfights and gunslingers, racism which frequently spills into violent psychopathic behaviour and of course like any western - Anti Heroes.
Though not Tarantino's best work Django is still a very good movie. The story, the setting, the characters are all terrific. And in his own meandering, rambling way Tarantino arrives at the final confrontation. One very good thing about the movie is even though you know its mainly about revenge the way the story is told you do not know if the revenge will succeed and how will it succeed.
The acting as usual from all Tarantino characters is very good. Christoph Waltz is fabulous in what seems like a continuation of his role from Inglorious Basterds. Leonardo DiCaprio is menacing and cruel all with a smile on his face. There are a host of Tarantino regulars and some new ones in small cameos. The pick being Jonah Hill's scene depicting an early KKK.
Overall definitely worth a watch but will not be easy to digest for non Tarantino fans.
P.S. There is a lot of violence, profanity and cruel behaviour which might not be easy to stomach for a lot of people.
