Verdict : Beautifully animated film but lacking that spark of other great Pixar films.
Director : Mark Andrews (One Man Band -short animated film, John Carter - Writer), Brenda Chapman ( The Prince of Egypt)
Cast : Kelly Macdonald (Trainspotting, No Country For Old Men), Billy Connolly (The Man who sued God, Boondock Saints series), Emma Thompson (Howard's End, Sense and Sensibility)
Story : Set in Scotland this is the story of Princess Merida who wants to go against tradition and decide her own fate. Her conflict with her mother leads her to make a choice with far reaching effects. Now her bravery will be tested and it is up to her to set things right again.
Rating: Pixar has always been setting new benchmarks in animated movies. Be it in the technology used, the look of the film or the story and the characters. With Brave the animation is again of the highest quality imaginable. Some of the scenes are so amazingly done that it is difficult to believe that everything is computer generated.
The characters are also interesting, lovable like the strong willed princess, her warriorlike but sweet heart father, her stern mother.
However where the movie lacks is in terms of its story and character development. Though innovative the story does not have enough tension or conflict to really raise the tempo. Also you can pretty much see well in advance how things are going to turn out towards the end. Even the conflict between the characters and their fears, worries, desires are not shown well enough. So you don't really root for them.
I have not seen the other animated movies nominated for Oscars but I'm not sure if this one was worthy of winning it.
Overall worth a watch for fans of animated movies but not what we've come to expect from Pixar.
