Les Miserables (2012)

Rating: Beautifully crafted, very well acted and brilliantly sung movie.

Director : Tom Hooper ( The King's Speech, The Damned United)

Cast : Hugh Jackman (X-Men, The Prestige), Russel Crowe (Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind), Anne Hathway (The Dark Knight Rises, Love and Other Drugs), Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, Bruno) Helena Bonham Carter (Fight Club, Harry Potter)

Story : Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, this is the story of the conflict between Jean Valjean, a convict trying to redeem himself and Javert a fanatic police officer who will go to any lengths to capture Jean Valjean.  Set against the background of a rebellion in France the story includes various characters whose lives are impacted by Jean Valjean

Review : First of all let me make it clear that this is musical. This does not mean that the movie is peppered with a few songs here and there. The dialogues in this movie are not spoken but sung. So watch it only if you can listen to 2.5 hours of singing.

Once you get past that (it will be difficult for Indian audiences) you realize the beauty of the movie. The source material is a wonderfully complex and layered story. The director does a very good job of transporting it onto the big screen. The costumes, the art direction, the makeup all are done very nicely to give it a wonderful look.

The performances in the film are are all award worthy. Hugh Jackman has a very difficult character in Jean Valjean but he does a marvelous job. The singing, the expressions are top notch. You really start rooting for his character. Anne Hathway in a cameo is superb and makes your heart reach out to her. Sacha Baron and Helena provide the much need relief and do it very well. Rest of the cast also put in impressive performances. Russel Crowe though competent falls short against such superb performances which is unfortunate considering his character is supposed to match Jean Valjean

The real star of the film though is the music and the songs. They will have you captivated throughout the movie.

Overall definitely worth a watch but you will have to get used to the singing

P.S. All the actors have sung the songs themselves.
