John Carter (2012)

Rating : Surprisingly good movie. But too cliched and predictable

Director : Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall-E)

Cast : Taylor Kitsch (X-Men Origins : Wolverine, Savages), Lynn Collins (X-Men Origins :Wolverine, True Blood), Willem Defoe (Spiderman, Body of Evidence), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes, Kick-Ass)

Story : John Carter, a Civil War veteran,  is forced by the army to join again and fight against the Red Indians. While escaping a gun fight he enters a cave where there is strange man with a medallion. Upon touching it he gets transported to Mars and gets caught up in another fight to save a kingdom and a princees. Will the reluctant hero rise up to the challenge?

Review : This movie was touted as one of the most expensive flops. Thus I was naturally curious to see it. There is very little wrong with the movie. It has everything. A complex and intriguing story, based on a book series which was the inspiration for many acclaimed science fiction writers. Well designed special effects and creatures. A reluctant hero who has super powers, a beautiful heroine who is strong as well. A director whose films are probably some of the best animated films of all time.

The problem with the movie is that all of it has been done before. Since the books were return so long back (1917) and inspired many other books and films there is nothing new really for the audience. You can predict every single event that is going to take place in the movie. Also the maker have combined the story of a trilogy into one movie. So there is lot of stuff happening but you don't really connect with the characters as the movie doesn't really delve on them. It doesn't spend time in creating the wonder and mystery of a new land.

So while the movie doesn't lack anything it doesn't really offer anything new.

Overall a very predictable which probably could have been more.
