Attack the Block (2011)

Rating : Decent alien action flick. Not great but entertaining.

Director : Joe Cornish (Debut film. Writer for The adventures of Tintin)

Cast : Jodie Whittaker (as Sam), John Boyega (as Moses), Alex Esmail (as Pests)

Story : A group of juvenile delinquents beat an alien life form to death. This starts a war of a whole new level as they now have to fight to save their block from an all out alien invasion.

Review : Considering recent events the whole idea of showing juvenile delinquents as heroes had me concerned. This is not the type of image movies should encourage. The starting 15 minutes of the movie make it difficult for you to even imagine being able to root for the group. However to the directors credit once the alien attack begins you forget all of that and get caught up in the action. He does try and redeem the gang a bit too showing that they really haven't become the bad ass gangsters as they pretend to be.

The highlight of the movie are the aliens. Innovative in design, they look scary, especially if something like that chases after you in the night. The action and chase sequences are very well choreographed however they fail to really lift you off your seats.

The characters are kept realistic but you don't really get behind them towards the end or feel their tension.

This is the only drawback of the movie which stops it from being a really good movie. The tension escalates but never really peaks.

Overall a decent film to watch especially if you like alien movies.

P.S. Mind it that there is a lot of profanity in the movie and some gore. So might not be suitable for kids.
