Rating : Visually amazing movie. Worth a watch, but must see on the big screen
Director : Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings trilogy, Heavenly Creatures)
Cast : Ian Mckellen (Lord of the Rings - Gandalf, X-Men - Magneto), Martin Freeman ( Love Actually, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), Richard Armitage (Robin Hood, MI-5 - both TV series)
Story : The Hobbit is mainly the story of Bilbo Baggins adventures. How he befriended elves, dwarves, wizard, came into possession of The One Ring and also managed to defeat a dragon. The first part of this three part movie series focuses on how Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) is persuaded by Gandalf and a band of dwarves to join him on their quest to reclaim the dwarves home from Smaug the dragon. One the journey not only the skeptical dwarves but also Bilbo discovers that there is more to him than meets the eye.
Review : With Lord of the rings Peter Jackson had taken visual effects to a whole new level. With The Hobbit he has raised the bar even higher. The dawrf city of Erebor, the escape from the Goblins, the Wargs they've all been designed beautifully. Throw in along with this great use of 3D and you have a spectacle worthy of watching on the big screen.
The story is also engrossing since it has wonderful source material. Though Tolkien's Hobbit might not be as epic and grand as LOTR it is still one of the best fantasy adventure novels. Though there are some changes Peter Jackson has made to the original, the story flows very smoothly and the almost three hour length doesn't seem long.
The acting is good. Martin Freeman is very endearing as the innocent, sheltered hobbit caught up in this massive adventure. Richard Armitage displays good screen presence, worthy of a dwarf king.
Special mention must go to the cinematography and art direction. Middle Earth has been created even more beautifully than in LOTR.
The only drawback is sometime everything seems a bit to artificial and computer generated. But only in fleeting glimpses.
Overall very good movie. Worth a watch
