Jack Reacher (2012)

Rating : Average movie. The books are much better.

Director : Christopher McQuarrie (The Way of the Gun)

Cast : Tom Cruise (Top Gun, Mission Impossible), Rosamund Pike (Die Another Day, Wrath of the Titans)

Story : Based on the Lee Child novel - One Shot, the movie begins with a sniper shooting five random people. The man implicated in the shootings calls for Jack Reacher. A former army inspector, Reacher is currently a ghost. But the set of skills he possesses makes him a dangerous enemy. His investigation opens up a much deeper conspiracy.

Review : I have read only a couple of books of the Jack Reacher series, so I might not be an expert to comment on them. But the thing about the books is its all about the central character. The way he is described in the books, the way he operates, thinks, fights etc.. make him a very imposing and difficult personality to bring on screen. Fans of the book, especially, will hold him in very high regard.

This is where the movie falters. Honestly I don't have much of a problem with Tom Cruise essaying the role despite the obvious physical difference from the way Reacher is described in the novels. The bigger problem is the direction and dialogues. They are unable to convey Reacher's persona effectively. None of the famed intellect, deductive powers, survival and fighting skills come to the fore. This makes the movie feel bland.

The performance are decent, nothing great. Tom Cruise has to maintain a calm and stoic exterior so he underplays nicely. Rosamund Pike only serves as eye candy. Werner Herzog (Famed documentary director of Grizzly Man) and Robert Duvall (Godfather series - Tom Hagen) have interesting cameos.

Overall a decent film but not worth going to the theater for. Better read the book.
