Edge of Darkness (2010)

Rating : Decent dark thriller. Nothing spectacular though

Director : Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, Mask of Zorro)

Cast : Mel Gibson (Braveheart, The Patriot), Ray Winstone (King Arthur, Beowulf)

Story : Mel Gibson is a homicide detective. When his daughter is shot in front of his eyes it is assumed that he was the target. However his own personal investigation into the case unravels a conspiracy far deeper than he had imagined. How far is a father willing to go when he has lost everything?

Review : Martin Campbell has proven that he is quite adept at directing action / thriller movies. He doesn't disappoint here either. Edge of Darkness is gruesome, brutal and keeps you engaged throughout. The plot twists unravel nicely and some of the violence will catch you off guard just like the protagonist.

What stops it from being a very good film though is the ease with which Mel Gibson manages to investigate. When a conspiracy this size is about to fall open you expect things to be a little tougher for him. But he hardly faces any obstacles. This hampers he audience from really getting behind the hero and rooting for him to win. You know that the bad guys are gonna pay for what they did.

Performance wise Mel Gibson is good as the father bent on revenge. You can see the anger and pain in his eyes. Ray Winstone is equally good as the mysterious yet dangerous 'clean-up' man. The villain though (Stryker in X-Men : Wolverine) is a bit disappointing. He just doesn't have the screen presence to hold his own against such heavyweights

Overall worth a watch if you're in the mood for some action. But not a movie that will stay with you for long.
