Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)

Rating : Interesting, Quirky movie. But not for everyone's tastes

Director : Woody Allen (Annie Hall, Midnight in Paris)

Cast : Javier Bardem (Skyfall, No Country for Old Men), Penelope Cruz (Volver, Pirates of the Caribbean : On Stranger Tides), Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers, Lost in Translation), Rebecca Hall (The Awakening, The Town)

Story: :Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) are best friends. While Vicky is bright, focused and cautious and engaged to be married, Cristina is adventurous, romantic and slightly aimless. When they are invited to spend the summer in Barcelona things change for them as they meet the seductive artist Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem). Their complex relationship is thrown into further turmoil by the arrival of Juan Antonio's fiery ex-wife Maria Elena (Penelope Cruz).

Review : Woody Allen has this way of showcasing life in a very different, eccentric bordering on depressing way. Yet within all that quirkiness you realize he strikes home a point. Majorly being the futility and folly of human intelligence You can spend hours analyzing the message he sent in the movie but never get too serious or feel preached to while watching the movie. VCB lives up to it all with added advatage of beautiful Spanish backgrounds.

The characters and their relationships are typical Woody Allen -  seemingly normal but lots of deep underlying currents. The acting from everyone is very good. Its difficult to believe Javier Bardem is the same guy who plays the bad guy in Skyfall and No Country.. But Penelope Cruz steals the show with the feisty performance. She is a joy to watch every time she is on the screen

Special mention has to be made for some beautiful cinematography and wonderful Spanish music.

It might surprise some people initially with the characters promiscuity and openness about it. But you soon get over it.

Overall a good film to watch especially for fans of Woody Allen.
