Rating : A movie of two halves. One good, One predictable. Might disappoint a lot of viewers.
Director : Reema Kagti (Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd)
Cast : Aamir Khan (3 Idiots, Lagaan), Kareena Kapoor (Heroine, Jab We Met), Rani Mukerjee (Aiyaa, Black)
Story : Aamir is a police offer going through a personal crisis. His son died in an accident for which he blames himself. The accident also strained his relationship with his wife Rani Mukerjee. Things get even more complicated for him due to the mysterious death of a movie star and the entry of a sex worker (Kareena Kapoor) in his life.
Review: The expectations from an Aamir Khan movie are very high, especially when one comes after a gap of 3 years. Kudos to the actor for trying something so different in a time where everyone is obsessed with nonsensical masala movies. Also to the director for attempting something like this. They almost manage to pull it off.
The first half is a taut thriller even if its not fast paced. The mood created is fabulous thanks to some wonderful art direction, cinematography and music. The acting from everyone is understated which enhances the atmosphere but the actors never really challenge themselves. I have some issues with the portrayal The mannerism and dialogues don't go with the character. Kareena Kappor does not look or speak like a low class sex worker. Aamir Khan does not speak like a hardened police officer named Shekhawat. Thought special mention must go to Nawazuddin who is wonderful in his small role.
The problem is the second half. It is way too predictable. If you've seen as many movies of a particular genre as I have you can predict the ending immediately. I have no issues with the so called 'twist' in the movie. I have issues with how predictable it is and then how long it takes to unravel even though pretty much everyone has figured it out.
Overall if this wasn't an Aamir movie it would have suffered a very bad fate at the box office. Watch only if you want to see something different and/or Aamir. But don't keep expectations too high.
