Rating : Gets better as the movie progresses. Just have to get past the initial awkwardness of the concept
Director : Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird)
Cast : Alan Alda (M*A*S*H, The Aviator), Ellen Burstyn (The Exorcist, Requiem for a dream)
Story : A man and a woman meet by chance at a small inn. Though both are married the end up sleeping with each other and fall in love. The film tracks their lover over two decades as they meet each at the same place once every yer for a weekend.
Review: It is difficult to initially absorb the concept of love story about two people committing adultery. Even though they feel guilty the continue with it which makes it hard for the audience to feel anything but contempt for them. However this only last for the first few encounters.
This is where the true beauty of the film is. The film is shot pretty much in only one location. Except for the two main actors there is hardly anyone present. And they are cheating on their respective spouses even though their marriages are not particularly unhappy. However you get past that and get completely engrossed in their stories and start feeling for the characters
A major credit for this goes to the acting. The pair are fabulous, there is great chemistry between them. This is helped by some good direction and very good dialogues. Over the period of years, with the change in times you can actually see the changes in them through the dresses, body language, mannerisms etc. You realize how completely different individuals they've become but are still together because they love each other so much.
Overall definitely worth a one time watch.
