Rashomon (Japanese)(1950)

Rating : Excellent movie.Must watch, especially for people really wanting to learn about cinema

Director: Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samuria which was remade as The Magnificent Seven and Sholay, Yojimbo which was remade as A fistful of Dollars)

Cast : Toshiro Mifune (Seven Samurai, Yojimbo)

Story : A samurai is murdered in a forest. During the trial his wife, the supposed killer and the dead samurai himself all testify. But all give different accounts. A fourth person, a woodcutter who saw the entire thing, tells a completely different tale again. Who out of these four is telling the truth?

Review : This is the first Kurosawa film I have seen and I can see why he is regarded as one of the greatest directors. One must keep into mind that the movie was made in 1950. The movie was way ahead of its time then. Considering the kind of movies made now, especially in Indian cinema, it is still way ahead of our cinema.

One of the hallmarks of the movie is that the premise is simple. A murder has been committed, who did it. The true genius is the way it is told. The story grips you from the start, never lets go and will leave you racking your brains till the end.

A lot of people will think while watching the movie that they have seen similar themes, styles, concepts a lot of times. That is exactly why this movie is a classic because it pioneered these things.

Also after watching the movie please do read about it, how it was made, what was in the director's mind etc. This will help you appreciate the movie even more.

Overall a fabulous movie.
