Enemy at the Gates (2001)

Rating : Average war movie because of a loose script

Director : Jean-Jacques Annaud (Seven Years in Tibet, The name of the Rose)

Cast : Jude Law ( Sherlock Holmes series as Watson), Ed Harris (The Rock, A Beautiful Mind), Rachel Weisz (The Mummy, The Mummy returns)

Story : Set during World War II, the battle for Stalingrad between Russia and Germany turns into a battle between two snipers on opposite sides. A battle of wits and marksmanship

Review : If the movie would have been restricted to the synopsis above it would have been interesting. The cat and mouse game between the two snipers gets you hooked. Unfortunately the director has thrown in a completely unnecessary love triangle which seems too contrived. Plus there are a lot of co-incidences in the story which you know are there to blatantly heighten the emotional angle. Add to that a slightly English accent by the supposedly Russian soldiers and an over-dramatic and slightly loud background score. All these things never let you get engrossed in the movie completely.

The acting is decent from everyone especially Ed Harris. The portrayal of a wartime situation though feels unconvincing. You don't really see any hardship of war.

Overall when you are used to seeing movies like saving Private Ryan or something like Apocalypse Now which had a slightly more personal story, a movie like this is disappointing.

There are much better war movie. I recommend you watch those.
