Rating : 7/10
Director : Karan Johar
Cast : Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Jimmy Shergill
Story : Rizwan Khan (Shahrukh), an autistic Muslim from Bombay, moves to America to live with his younger brother (Jimmy Shergill) after their mother expires. There he marries a Hindu single mother, Mandira (Kajol). All seems to be going well for this family until 9/11 happens. Their lives take a dramatic turn as they become subject to racism and things get worse after their son is the victim of a violent attack. Thus begins Rizwan's epic journey across America which not only moves his friends and family but also an entire nation
Review : I was very skeptical about Shahrukh's ability to play an autistic man. He has this reputation of being Shahrukh Khan in his movies and not getting into the skin of his character. Similarly Karan Johar is like the Ekta Kappor of the big screen, dealing mainly with family dramas.
However both of the surprise us here especially Shahrukh Khan. He has to carry the entire movie on his shoulders and does a wonderful job. I don't know how accurately he has portrayed Asperger's Syndrome but what i do know his acting is excellent throughout.
Karan Johar has also done a good job but i believe it is his weakness as a director that stops the movie from being truly excellent. The rest of the cast chip in with decent performances. The story by Shibani Bathija is intriguing and well paced and the music by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy is wonderful.
All in all worth a watch for both fans as well as critics of Shahrukh Khan. He proves what a fine actor he is.
P.S. Please don't compare Shahrukh's performance with that of Sean Penn in I am Sam or Dustin Hoffman in Rainman. These performances were world class not only because of the wonderful actors but also the great support from the direction, story etc.
