The Box (2009)

Rating : 4/10

Director : Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko)

Cast : Cameron Diaz, James Marsden (X-Men : Cyclops) and Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon : Richard Nixon)

Story : Cameron Diaz and James Marsden are a happy suburban couple who, one day, are presented by a choice by Frank Langella. They are given a box and 24 hours time to push the button on the box. If they don't push the button nothing will happen, however if they push the button someone they do not know will die and they will receive a million dollars.

Review : Richard Kelly brings us another psychological sci-fi thriller after Donnie Darko. Now I know Donnie Darko has a cult following but the movie was too abstruse for my liking, though there were some good performances, especially from Jake Gyllenhaal. Once again, exploring similar themes and territory in this movie Richard Kelly tries to make things simpler for the audience. However that I think is a drawback as the movie explains everything too well leaving little for the viewers to think about.

This leaves the movie in no-mans land. It tries be too intellectual for the lovers of the pop sci-fi thriller/horror genre but will fall short of the expectations of lovers of Donnie Darko. The performances from the lead actors are nothing extra-ordinary.

Overall I would recommend people to give this one a miss. Nothing special to watch even once.
