Student of the Year (2012)

Rating: Typical Karana Johar wonderland film. Falters a lot in the second half.

Director : Karan Johar (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, My Name is Khan)

Cast : Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhat, Varun Dhawan (All Debuts)

Story : Student of the Year is an annual competition held in St. Theresa's College. However this time the competition has far reaching effect as friends become enemies. Bonds of trust, loyalty, friendship and love will be tested with far reaching repercussions.

Review : Welcome to the world of Karan Johar. The school/college or whatever its supposed to be is bigger than the Queen's palace. The lead actors and actresses keep posing regularly like they're shooting for some beach calender. Students can break into impromptu but choreographed dances at will but never seem to study and the poor seem richer than the average Indian middle class.

In this world we come across the various problems a group of friends face. Pretty much everyone has parent issues. They only have each other for support. But that equation is also thrown for a toss when the competition for the Student of the Year takes place.

This is where Karan Johar falters a lot. As long as things are restricted to romance, friendship, glossy weddings and beautiful locales, song and dance routines he is in his element. But when it comes to showing competition, ambition, jealousy he just cannot raise the intensity level. The movie starts of very nicely and the opening will have you intrigued by the competition and the predictable ending are a letdown. He does try and justify the absurd competition slightly with a rant by one of the students about it but doesn't work much.

The acting from the entire group of newcomers is decent without being extra-ordinary. They all seem comfortable in front of the camera and have good screen presence. Rishi Kapoor gives a slightly over the top but very endearing performance

Look wise the film is beautiful in a way only Karan Johar can do.

Overall a typical KJo film. Though I would prefer this over the Son of Sardars and Dabanggs any day.

P.S. Request to all Indian directors. Abstain from showing football or any other athletic event if you cant do it convincingly. It just ends up looking silly.
