On The Road (2012)

Rating : Tedious and boring movie. Now what was expected form the director and cast.

Director : Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries, Dark Water)

Cast : Garrett Hedlund (Tron : Legacy), Sam Riley (13, Brighton Rock), Kristen Stewart (Twilight Saga)

Story : Based on a book of the same name the movie is about a young writer Sal (Riley) in America of 1940's. Struggling with his writing since the death of his writer Sal embarks on a journey across America with his friend and hero Dean (Hedlund) meeting various people along the way.

Review : With On The Road the director has chosen a very difficult topic to convey on screen. But so was The Motorcycles Diaries. However where he succeeded with Diaries he fails here. This is a story about the Beat Generation (A group of writers who experimented with drugs, sexuality, religion etc). To capture their essence he shows them on endless road trips, debauchery, drugs etc

This is fine if you do it a couple of times. But repeating the same thing over and over again for more than 2 hours is a drag. It seems that the movie just like its principal characters doesn't know where it is headed. By the end you really don't care what happens the characters you just want it to get over.

The acting is decent from everyone but Garrett Hedlund stands out and delivers a very good performance. There are a host of cameos from people like Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams, Kirsten Dunst, Steve Buscemi but they don't really add much to the story

The cinematography is another strong point of the movie, beautifully capturing the journey across America.

Overall though the film is too long and repetitive to really enjoy the good parts
