Miss Lovely (Hindi) (Unreleased)

Rating : Had the potential to be a very good movie. But never lives up to it

Director : Ashim Ahluwalia (Debut film)

Cast : Nawazuddin Siddiqui (Gangs of Wasseypur), Anil George, Niharika Singh

Story : Set in the underbelly of Bollywood, in the world of C grade movies, this is the story of two brothers (Nawaz and Anil) who dream to make it big in the film industry - albeit in their own ways. When a girl enters the life of one of the brothers everything goes for a toss and things are not what they seem.

Review : I was very excited to watch Miss Lovely after reading all the rave reviews it had got, especially at Cannes. Yes the subject matter is very interesting, it is handled in a very different way than one would normally expect, the casting and the background score is perfect. Despite all of this the movie fell short of my expectations. The first half of the movie is very jarring. The story moves jerkily, as if the director is not sure what genre his film belongs to. Is it a noir thriller, a pulp fiction, a drama. In the second half he gets a better hold on the story and the film moves along much more smoothly.

The acting from Nawaz is very good. The rest of the cast look the part, but don't have the necessary screen presence nor the talent to really grab your attention. The background score and art direction are spot on. The opening credits design is very interesting and will get you excited. but its a rocky road after that.

Overall could have been a much better, much more entertaining movie with a larger appeal. Now it only seems to want to cater to a festival circuit audience.
