Barfi! (2012)

Rating : Good Sweet movie with some very good performances. Worth a Watch

Director : Anurag Basu (Murder, Kites)

Cast : Ranbir Kapoor (Rajneeti, Rockstar), Priyanka Chopra (Fashion, Dostana), Ileana (Pokiri)

Story : Set in 1970 Darjeeling Barfi! is a unique love triangle involving Barfi (Ranbir Kapoor) a speech and hearing impaired boy who falls in love with Shruti (Ileana). However unable to go against her parents and society Shruti marries someone else. Then Barfi discovers his true love in Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra) an autistic girl who is the heiress to one of the richest families. However not all goes to plan as Jhilmil is kidnapped. Will Barfi find Jhilmil or will he end up with Shruti who discovers the courage to follow her heart...

Review : I will first start with the strongest aspect of the movie. The performance by the actors. Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra are outstanding. They convey their disabilities without ever going overboard and form probably one of the cutest couples ever in Indian cinema. Their performances are sure to garner them every Indian award while highlighting their credentials as the top actors in the country. Ranbir Kapoor is amazingly light and confident with his body language while Priyanka Chopra never comes out of her character. They are ably supported by Ileana (restrained and beautiful) and Saurabh Shukla (very good performance by him after a long time)

Their acting is helped further by a very sweet and melodious music score. Beautiful cinematography and some  wonderful locations. The editing is also very good constantly flitting between different time periods

The only problem is the direction. Though Anurag Basu has done a good job he again shows how dependent he is on the west. Movies like Murder, Life in a Metro and this heavily borrow from a lot of Hollywood movies. This for me is akin to trying to achieve greatness by standing on shoulders of others who have done the hard work.

Overall worth a watch for the performances,  but not the right choice to send to Oscars. We are glorifying copycats
