Rating : BEAUTIFUL. A MAGICAL FILM!!!
Director : Martin Scorsese (The Departed, Casino, Good fellas)
Cast : Asa Butterfield (The boy in the striped pyjamas) , Ben Kingsley (Gandhi, Schindler's List), Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat)
Story : Hugo (Asa Butterfield) is an orphan living in the walls of train station in Paris in 1930. He fixes all the clocks at the station, a art he learnt from his late father. The only thing he can't fix is an automaton, the machine Hugo was working on with his father before he passed away. The quest to fix the automaton brings him in contact with an old toymaker (Ben Kingsley) with a troubled past of his own. All this is done while hiding from the strict station inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen). Will Hugo succeed in his quest and how will it impact others.
Review : Normally I do not associate Martin Scorsese with a family movie. Hence i was very excited to watch Hugo especially after reading the rave reviews it had been getting. I have to say it was wonderful.
Through Hugo you can see the passion that director has for the movies. He is in love with them and that romance comes out beautifully. The story maybe a simple one but he way it is made is spell binding. Any true lover of cinema will fall in love with this medium all over again after seeing this movie.
The acting is very good from everyone involved but a special mention needs to be made of the art direction. The train station, the streets of Paris, movie making in 1900 all have been created beautifully and are a visual treat.
All in all a movie everyone should see. Especially our film makers who have started thinking that film making is more about slick and stylish camera work, dresses etc rather than a beautiful medium of story telling
