ABCD - AnyBody Can Dance (2013)

Rating : Cliched movie with some very refreshing soundtrack and choreography

Director : Remo D'Souza (F.A.L.T.U)

Cast : Prabhudeva (Choreographer and Director of Rowdy Rathore, Wanted) Kay Kay Menon (Black Friday, Gulaal) and pretty much all of "Dance India Dance" Dancers along with Lauren Gottlieb of "So You Think You Can Dance"

Story : Typical underdog story in which Vishnu (Prabhudeva) trains and inspires a bunch of talented but directionless delinquents to take on his former employer's (Kay Kay) ruthless and money minded dance academy.

Review: For a movie like this its inevitable that it will be compared to the Step Up series. Though accurate the comparison will be a bit unfair. This is the first time an Indian dance flick is being made and so we can cut it a bit of slack.

The story is filled with every possible emotional cliche (even a town drunk) and conflicts are too easily resolved, the direction though steady is nothing spectacular, when it comes to acting Kay Kay is over the top, Prabhudeva is awkward while speaking Hindi. The newcomers are average.

Now comes the high point of the movie. The Dance. It seems like Remo was very happy to finally get to choreograph trained dancers. He goes all out and choreographs some exciting dance sequences. Even the chase sequence at the start is well choreographed (if only he didn't use so much slow motion). One extended sequence of a solo performance from Prabhudeva shows the man has still got it even after all these years.. The dance is ably supported by some thumping foot tapping music.

One issue with he movie is that its quite long. It could have been better with some sharper editing.

Overall worth a watch for the sincerity, the heart and the dance performances even if the overall movie is cliched
